Xinhua News Agency, Nanjing, November 22 (Reporter Zhao Jiulong) Jiangsu Station, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and Jiangsu Institute of Freshwater Fisheries recently released the Bulletin on Aquatic Biological Resources and Fishery Waters Environment in Jiangsu Province in 2021. The water quality of Jiangsu’s important fishery waters generally meets the fishery water quality standards. Compared with 2020, the density of fish resources in Jiangsu section of the main stream of the Yangtze River increased significantly, the number of the Yangtze finless porpoise, an indicator species, increased, and aquatic biological resources showed a good recovery trend.
Jiangsu is an important distribution area of Chinese sturgeon, Yangtze finless porpoise, mullet and other national key protected aquatic wild animals. Through observation and investigation, the population of Yangtze finless porpoise in Jiangsu section of the main stream of the Yangtze River in 2021 is about 96, which is concentrated in the relevant waters of Nanjing and Zhenjiang. It is worth mentioning that the Yangtze finless porpoise has been continuously observed in some historical distribution blank areas such as Taizhou to Nantong waters.
As a national first-class protected wild animal, the population status of finless porpoise is an important indicator of the ecological health of the Yangtze River. Zhang Jianjun, deputy director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said that according to the feedback of the Yangtze finless porpoise scientific research results in 2022, the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River showed three characteristics: First, the distribution of the Yangtze finless porpoise showed an expanding trend, and the number of sightings increased. The team members witnessed finless porpoises in Nanjing, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou, Taizhou, Suzhou, Nantong and other waters. Second, the Yangtze finless porpoise population has a growing trend, and more "mother and child dolphins" have been witnessed. Third, the ecological environment in Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River has improved, and the ecological environment suitable for the Yangtze finless porpoise has been expanding.
