Senator Joe Biden of Delaware officially became the vice presidential candidate at the Democratic National Convention held in Denver, Colorado on the 27th.
Biden was born in Pennsylvania on November 20, 1942, and moved to Delaware with his family at the age of 10. In 1965, he graduated from the University of Delaware. In 1968, he obtained a law degree from the School of Law of Syracuse University and became a local lawyer.
In 1970, as a registered independent, he participated in the local government public office election as a Democrat, and was successfully elected, thus stepping into politics. Two years later, Biden was elected to the United States Senate for the first time at the age of 29.
However, just one month before Biden became a senator, his family had a car accident, his wife and daughter were killed and two sons were seriously injured. This heavy blow almost crushed Biden, making him once have the idea of giving up his position as a senator. After being persuaded by colleagues and friends, he finally announced his inauguration in his son’s ward. So far, Biden has been elected to the Senate six times. He used to be the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is now the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. He has rich experience in foreign affairs, national defense and legal affairs. At the same time, he is also a part-time law professor at the university.
Despite Biden’s influence in Congress, his two presidential campaigns ended in failure.
Public opinion believes that Obama’s choice of Biden as his running mate can make up for his lack of experience in political and foreign affairs.
Biden is regarded as a moderate liberal of the Democratic Party. He voted for the Bush administration to launch the Iraq war, but later admitted that it was a mistake and has been calling for a timetable for withdrawal.
Biden visited China twice in 1979 and 2001 respectively.
